How to get shit done

September 1st, 2010

“The resistance to the unpleasant situation is the root of suffering.”
Ram Dass

How do you get things done?

As you may have noticed there are a lot of tips about that floating around online.

One of my favorite productivity tips that have enabled me to get more done is to adopt a habit of acceptance.

This is a very helpful thing to cultivate. Here are two reasons why:

  • Less suffering. Pain is unavoidable in life. Suffering is however optional. The funny thing about a problem is that the negative feelings you may feel because of it do to a large extent not come from the problem itself. It comes from your resistance to the problem. You can choose to accept things as they are at this moment. When you accept you stop creating suffering within your own mind.
  • Less mental fatigue. You may sometimes be more tired because you get more done. But I have found that I feel less fatigued mentally and in better shape internally when working in an accepting mode. There is much less overthinking and negative emotions when you are in an accepting frame of mind so I guess that makes sense.

As you can see, acceptance is useful beyond just the area of productivity and is something you can incorporate into any part of your life.
Now, how does acceptance help you to get things done?

A short answer would be: as you accept you stop feeding so much energy into your own inner resistance. You stop sustaining and strengthening it. It dissipates. Now you can use your mind, energy, creativity and focus fully to get things done instead.

Procrastination is an inner resistance to something. Acceptance is a solution.

How to develop a habit of acceptance

Now it would be nice if I had a few snazzy and easy tricks to share here that would quickly help you to create a consistent habit of acceptance. I don’t. I have a few tips though.

  1. Be patient. Acceptance is like a mental muscle. The more you use it the stronger it becomes. And the procrastination tends to become less and less severe overall. Your mind has to get used to accepting as a habit that replaces resisting. So you just work at it. And gradually acceptance becomes more and more of a natural choice in your everyday life.
  2. Appreciate the upsides of acceptance. When you don’t feel like accepting then appreciate how much easier and enjoyable life becomes whenever you accept things as they are and work from there. This will turn your mood around for the moment and over time makes it easier for your mind to replace the habit of resistance with the habit of acceptance.
  3. Surrender and accept the emotion. Talking about acceptance can become a little abstract. You may feel like “well, I know I should accept X or Y, but how do I that practically?”. Here is one way that’s been helpful for me: When you feel a negative feeling then accept that feeling. Don’t try to fight it or to keep it out (like many of us have learned throughout life). Say yes to it. Surrender and let it in. Observe the feeling in your mind and body without labelling or judging it. If you let it in – for me the feeling then often seems to physically locate itself to the middle of my chest – and just observe it for maybe a minute or two something wonderful happens. The feeling just vanishes. And your mind stops putting in new energy into the problem.

Is acceptance a magic solution that will make everything awesome?

Not really. You will have to do something you find boring. Acceptance may not make it the most fun thing in the world. But it can make it easier to get the thing done. And quite often you can – with the help of acceptance – become enthusiastic and really get into something you resisted and didn’t think highly of at first.

As you step in the mental state of acceptance you just flow with what you choose to do. Your day becomes lighter. There is little or no resistance arising within. Just being in that state feels pretty great. And as a bonus, you can get much done too.

Learn about success from Arnold Schwarzenegger?? Damn right!

How to achieve your goals

August 24th, 2010

Bodybuilding world champion numerous times. One of the most highly paid actors in the last few decades. And now the governor of California. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s resume sounds more like the resume of three men rather than just one. How did he do it?

Here are a five clues, success habits and tips from Arnold himself.

1. Believe in yourself.

“I knew I was a winner back in the late sixties. I knew I was destined for great things. People will say that kind of thinking is totally immodest. I agree. Modesty is not a word that applies to me in any way – I hope it never will.”

“We all have great inner power. The power is self-faith. There’s really an attitude to winning. You have to see yourself winning before you win. And you have to be hungry. You have to want to conquer.”

“The mind is the limit. As long as the mind can envision the fact that you can do something, you can do it, as long as you really believe 100 percent.”

A very strong belief in yourself can be ridiculously useful.

Corny as it may sound, your belief in yourself determines a lot about your journey and your results. But the problem with statements like “Just believe in yourself, man!” is that they don’t come with any practical instructions on how to actually believe more I yourself. So you have a hard time getting anywhere.

I have found a few things that have been helpful.

  • First, by realizing that you are able to handle negative stuff that comes your way your belief in yourself and your capabilities grows.
  • You can also work on a similar process voluntarily. By setting goals and achieving them your belief in yourself increases. And by facing your fears and finding that you can indeed survive such experiences your belief in yourself goes up too. None of these options may sound that glamorous, fun or quick. And a lot of the time they aren’t. But like with so much else, you have to put in effort to get good results.

But there is also another side to this challenge. Quite a bit of the problem with a lack of belief in yourself comes from internal self-sabotage, self-limiting beliefs and resistance within your mind. It’s you holding yourself back.

I have found that reading Eckhart Tolle’s books like “A New Earth” – or books on mindfulness in general I guess – to help you realize that you are not your ego, thoughts or emotions and rereading to strengthen and deepen that belief can be very helpful to reduce the inner struggle, over-analyzing and self-sabotage. Over time you can get better control over your mind and you´ll stop listening so much to your own negative inner voices and emotional resistance.

Having a reasonably good handle on that part makes it easier to see yourself doing what you want to do. Because, as Arnold says, you have to be able to envision what you want to do or it will be very hard or just impossible bring that vision into reality.

By getting better control over your mind it becomes easier to hold this vision in your mind day after day, week after week. You’ll be less prone to self-sabotage. And your belief will waver less when being questioned or worse by other people or just society in general.

2. See struggle and failure as something positive.

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”

Failure is seldom the end of the world. It’s a part of the journey, a part of the learning curve. The problem is just that if you have a scarcity mentality then every failure or potential failure may seem as the sky falling. This can hold you back from performing well. Or from taking action at all. The key to overcome this is to develop an abundance mentality that tells you that there are always more opportunities. This allows you to not take the setbacks too seriously.

One way to help yourself to develop such a mentality is to replace some of the usual input – news, advertising – with information and the vibe from personal development authors/speakers. Another way is just to hang out more with people with an abundance mentality. Or just people that are positive and enthusiastic about life.

Now, most of the time you only really fail when you give up and surrender. If you keep going you’ll build your inner strength to live and move through rough patches. And if you are able to look at your setbacks and learn from them you can also deepen you knowledge, perhaps avoid some mistakes and find a better course towards your goal.

Remember that to succeed you need those failure. They make you stronger and smarter and that build-up of yourself is vital to success.

3. Go the extra mile.

“The last three or four reps is what makes the muscle grow. This area of pain divides the champion from someone else who is not a champion. That’s what most people lack, having the guts to go on and just say they’ll go through the pain no matter what happens.”

Going the extra mile. It’s not easy. Personally I think this has often been because I have just thought too much. Overthinking often leads to negative thought spirals where you use your mind to decrease your own strength through self-doubt. And if you add up all the overthinking you can waste months or perhaps even years of your life.

It’s more useful to just stop thinking when all then thinking that is needed is done. And to then just go and do what you choose to do. And then to learn from your experiences and to keep going.

4. Go work out.

“Training gives us an outlet for suppressed energies created by stress and thus tones the spirit just as exercise conditions the body.”

Yep, working out is very useful in more than one way. I have found that one of the best ways to turn an anxious, negative or weak mood fully around is simply to go exercising. It is also reliable because it is not so dependent on your mind. You just have to drag yourself wherever you need to go and make your body do certain movements to get the desired result.

And, anyway, how are you going to be able to go the extra mile without extra energy? Over the last few years I realized that many problems are simply based in a lack of energy. So working out or not isn’t much of a choice really. If you aren’t naturally a bouncy, high energy person then you have to exercise in some way to create that energy you need to achieve whatever it is you want in life.

5. Go and help others.

“Help others and give something back. I guarantee you will discover that while public service improves the lives and the world around you, its greatest reward is the enrichment and new meaning it will bring your own life.”

Helping others is valuable in so many ways. Beside the wonderful upsides that Arnold brings up – like the fact that you are helping people out and at the same time enriching and adding meaning to your own life – you also create a lot of relationships.

And the Law of Reciprocity, the urge to give back is strong in people. If you provide value and help to them then they will often be inclined to give you a hand when you need it. Or feel the need give back by paying it forward and helping other people.

This creates big, expanding upward spirals of positive actions and thoughts. And that can be very useful for us all.

From the Vault- Dlist Radio live from the D Train

You know how i kinda love Steve Slater??
at least publicly. I hadnt really thought much about it, but i did love the pageantry of his whole exit, the drama of it all. But underneath it all i really felt like what he did was kind of douchey and overdramatic.
Well imagine my surprise when my friend Shanon texted me that Slater wanted to come on my XXX Birthday Cruise!  I hastily put him down on my comp list and forgot about it.

amidst the revelry (thanks to those who came) my good friend Jeff Eason from Wilson Models
took our pic and “Mr Slater” and i shared a few words, except that it WASN’T Mr Slater, just a guy who got on the cruise and got mistaken for him and decided to go with it.

The whole thing turned into this hilarious melee with even the Village Voice chiming
Today we hopefully put it to rest
(i did get a lovely email from some guy at Imnotstevenslater@yahoo.com last night explaining he was the guy in the above pic and apologizing profusely, and i’m like “who cares? it’s fucking funny”)
Plus i want to thank my generous sponsors who made it possible

The Lazy Daisy hazy days of Summer.

August 4th, 2010
It’s been such an amazing Summer, that i always dread the beginning of August as it’s the last month of Summer and who’s ready for Fall? But at least my birthday is coming on the 8th so I’ll have a blast on Fire Island and dinner at Floyds with Bianca del Rio and the kids (plus my lovely boyfriend Chris)
I’m feeling less like promoting and more like relaxing these days- I’m so sick of talking about POLAND,
Michael Lucas (this months Out) or the death (ugh) of New York Nightlife (of i get one more call about this bi annual topic i’ll scream “Let it die already!”)
I’m feeling more like just hanging out, listening to Girls
and wearing no underwear.
But promoting does pay the bills,  so come Thursday to my show on Fire Island!

Legendary comedienne Margaret Cho offers to get naked in the newest issue of Playgirl.
She speaks candidly in the Playgirl September issue about her feelings on Sarah Palin and her possible presidential run.
“She wouldn’t be where she is because of feminism, but she wants to push women back into an era where we don’t have any rights, over our bodies, our reproductive rights. It’s very selfish.” says Cho, who’s album, Cho Dependent, is out in late August. The album is a musical comedy album featuring collaborations with Ani Difranco, Ben Lee and Fiona Apple.

About her body issues, which she has battled in the past, Cho claims:
“I feel great about my body. I feel doing burlesque had a lot to do with my own attitudes toward feeling good about myself and joyous about the shape that I’m in.”

and discusses her biggest regret:
“My deepest regret is that I wish I had spent more time in school. I don’t even have a high school diploma, which is a source of great embarrassment for me. I wish I had had more of a childhood because I grew up fast and never really had any kind of adolescence and am doomed to repeat that as I get older.”
Cho was interviewed by Playgirl VP of Marketing Daniel Nardicio, will be on newstands next month.
also in the Sept Issue are the 4 campus hunks i recruited in Spring, including one who has the biggest tool I’ve seen and wants to come to Fire Island to show it off!

Bitch I Stole Yo Purse

July 27th, 2010
“A lot of people enjoy being dead. But they are not dead, really. They’re just backing away from life. Reach out. Take a chance. Get hurt even. But play as well as you can. Go team, go! Give me an L. Give me an I. Give me a V. Give me an E. L-I-V-E. LIVE! Otherwise, you got nothing to talk about in the locker room.”
Ruth Gordon- Harold and Maude.
the last couple of weeks we’ve been having an argument around the house regarding the saying “dont regret the things you do, regret the things you dont do”
and i started thinking about regret. In theory, i like the thought that one should live their lives with No Regrets! but in actuality, that’s a very hard thing to do. It seems like some times, the course of no action is the best one to take. And in August, i think that may be the one i’ll be choosing.

Poland Aftermath, Margarita and Fire Island gets Saucy!

July 21st, 2010

This picture sums my week in Poland up about right. It’s funny, cause of all the pics from the events  this one best describes my personal feelings about Warsaw Europride- it was brutal.

We’ll skip over the events which were, as i was warned by a German friend they would be, “chaotic”. But the parade was one of the most insane things i have ever seen in my life. The New York Times didnt do it justice: there was a crowd of neo-nazi’s literally 30 feet away throwing some type of homemade bomb things at us which were fucking loud but, someone assured me, not dangerous.
(the police)
The stars of my group were the unflappable Julie Atlas Muz and Dee Dee Luxe, who stayed on the float despite Julie getting egged

and a constant barrage of people giving us the finger, or jeering at us, or making wretching noises as we went by. Here they are straight women who stood up for us, in insane heat, and all the while in headdresses and wigs!
(notice the Neo-nazi’s being held back by Police)
as much as i tried to stay positive i found it hard: the crowd supporting us was paltry at best, and even when there was a crowd there wasnt alot of actual support- most people seemed to be just happy that SOMETHING was happening, not actually caring if we were Gay or Lithuanian or whatever.
I got to spend a lot of time with Dustin Lance Black (of Milk fame) and he gave an empassioned speech at the end of the parade that, while true, was hopeful at best i felt like he had to stretch it to find something great to say.
My heart really went out to the Polish gays: it seems like it would be very hard to be in a country where people actively hate you.
Yes, i know America has its faults, but i’ve never seen anything like this, and hope i never have to again.
And then there were the parties!

Dworld Underwear Party: Friday, July 23rd: Cockfight! 11:30pm
