Promoter/Producer/Marketing specialist Daniel Nardicio celebrates 10 years of legendary underwear parties on Fire Island this Summer- and to celebrate he’s upped the ante to include a Saturday Afternoon Tea Dance, Saturday evening performance series entitled The Icon Series, and Throwdown Saturday Night with DJ Johnny Dynell!
Underwear Parties!
Fridays at 11:30PM, DN and Co. return with his famously popular DWorld Underwear Party - a Fire Island staple which celebrates 10 years this season. Friday at The Ice Palace is THE place to be, and the DWorld Underwear Party is the epicenter of all the excitement. Each week will be hosted by Big Brother alumni Will Wikle. DJ is Chuck McTague.
Many recall Daniel bringing Lady Gaga out for his birthday just as she was making it big, and last year he nabbed pop princess Kat Deluna (Whine Up) to kick off the season. The 600 person-plus event is Fire Island’s biggest weekly party, at Fire Island’s biggest venue.

Saturday’s DN and Co bring back home Fire Island’s legendary Tea- each and every Saturday at 5:00pm there will Bulldog Gin sponsored Hun-Tea featuring the best DJ’s NYC and beyond has to offer, plus Go-Go’s and Fire Island’s hottest boys. Featured DJ’s include DJ Sveta from Sydney Mardi Gras, David Serrano, DJ Steven Oliveri (Sip nTwirl/ Fire Island Pines) Steve Sidewalk, Vito Fun, Rich King et al.
The Icon Series
The Icon Series kicks off Saturday, July 7th with Carnegie Hall and Broadway Diva Justin Vivian Bond. The series continues each Saturday night at 10pm and will feature shows by comediennes Sandra Bernhard and Margaret Cho, “I Kissed A Girl” singer Jill Sobule, Chicago’s all male burlesque troupe The Stage Door Johnny’s and cabaret stars Meow Meow (a must see!) Justin Sayre, Bridget Everett and the legendary Candis Cayne June 30th. The jewel in the crown as it were is an evening with Tony winner Alan Cumming and the Icon herself, Miss Liza Minnelli with Billy Strich! Yes, Liza at The Palace! Bond, Meow Meow, and Cumming will all be music directed by Grammy winning pianist Lance Horne.
Nardicio exclaims: “It’s been a tradition for me each year to blow it out for my birthday weekend, and since I’ve had Gaga, it’s been hard to top. But I truly think having Ms Minnelli is one of the biggest joys in my career”.

Throwdown Saturday Night!
Late night Saturdays (12am-4am) DJ Johnny Dynell (Jackie 60, Van Dam, Mr Black) joins Nardicio for a weekly residency called Throwdown Saturday Night, a dance party featuring DN Go Go and weekly rotating hosts including promoters Sean Mazur and Brian Raferty. Dynell is experimenting with a new sound he’s calling “Meat Rack House.” Dynell explains, “It’s not Pines music, and it’s not quite Grove music- it’s somewhere in the middle so I’m calling it Meat Rack House.”
Each week Throwdown Saturday Night will be broadcast on Sirius Satellite Radio for over 1 million listeners.
Home for Wayward Boys
And if that isn’t enough, each Saturday Daniel holds a free cocktail party at his “Home for Wayward Boys” in Cherry Grove- a truly unique marketing concept where invited guests get to experience fun brands in a relaxed, exclusive environment. The poolside party is sponsored by Stoli Vodka, Mercy Hangover Prevention, Dominic Ford 3D porn company, Rejuvenationmdnyc.com, Mandelay Climax Control Gel and Mate Magazine, Europe’s largest gay magazine. Ok, I’m back after 10 days in my beloved hometown of New Orleans- and very happy to be back in NYC. It was odd to have 10 days off without having an event. It made me miss NYC parties. I’m a bit overwhelmed work wise, booking Fire Island, getting ready to move into my Home for Wayward Boys, and all the events that take place all Summer. As per usual, rumors are floating around about what the Pines are doing to try and compete (again?) by throwing a similar event. It reminds me of what someone wiser told me years ago in Nightlife: “If you worry about doing what you do well, as opposed to doing poorly what someone else does, you’ll make a stronger name for yourself”
I’m paraphrasing wildly, but wise words indeed.

Molly Pope and Cole Escola, bastard children of the Orpheum Circuit and the Hollywood studio system, join forces in their Feinstein’s debut as part of the Downtown Series presented by Daniel Nardicio and Thirsty Girl. Molly Pope, the new-old-school-diva, plays it fast and loose with an eclectic mix of new, old and antique numbers. Recently named the “Best Singer to Turn Life Into a Cabaret” by the Village Voice in their 2011 “Best of NYC” issue, Miss Pope juxtaposes ingenious pop reinventions with the Great American Songbook and adds a dash of faux-reography to create her own unique nero-retro style and sound. Cole Escola, who blends “boyish mischief with dizzy charm and the ruthless coyness of a starlet bent on fame” (Time Out New York), performs comedic original songs like they’re old-timey showstoppers and old-timey showstoppers like they’re nobody’s business. Conceived in a poorly-lit gay bar in the West Village, this double act will satiate young and old show queens alike. Brandon James Gwinn joins the duo on piano for this madcap evening. Now, while February for most people means dreary cold and winter, for me it means one thing and one thing only: Mardi Gras! If you’ve been following my exploits, you know by now that I love all things New Orleans (ok, except the crime)~ but i do love the city and the feel, so i am thrilled to be able to throw TWO Mardi Gras events- one is the adorable Ingrid Lucia and her traditional Mardi Gras Band at Feinsteins, the other is Nardi Gras, a decidedly different take on Mardi Gras- with MUCH less clothing, and lots more, ahem, bead getting.
I implore you to do them both- one being much more highbrow, the other just low down and dirty. Either way they’re a great way to celebrate life, in all its splendor. And after all, isnt that what we’re really here to do?

New York: NYC nightlife promoter Daniel Nardicio, responsible for some of New York’s most scandalous gay events, joins forces with power producer Jen Gapay (aka Thirsty Girl) in curating a series of their favorite downtown divas and bringing them uptown into the tony venue Feinstein’s at The Regency. This “Downtown Series” includes Time Out Top 10 cabaret stars Bridget Everett & Natalie Joy Johnson, plus up and coming Molly Pope, Cole Escola, Angela Di Carlo and Amber Martin.
The series kicks off Feb 13th with the luscious New Orlean’s native Ingrid Lucia, with her Traditional New Orleans Band brought up from the Big Easy for the show, to celebrate Mardi Gras. Lucia is best known as the lead singer of the cult band The Flying Neutrinos. Introducing Lucia will be drag sensation Bianca Del Rio who is a New Orleans native.
Next up is Bridget Everett Feb 19th, who topped Time Out’s Best of Cabaret Issue for 2010, and is best known for her raucous lyrics and over the top antics. Opening for Everett will be powerhouse vocalist Amber Martin, who is gathering quite a following in downtown circles, accruing such fans as Sandra Bernhard and Justin V Bond.
Feb 28th is the adorable modern cabaret star Molly Pope who is joined by Logo TV star and Youtube sensation Cole Escola, and the 29th brings fiery redhead Angela Di Carlo, who’s Madmen show has been making waves downtown, and broadway’s own Natalie Joy Johnson, who originated the role of Enid Hoopes in Legally Blonde.
For this series Nardicio brought on co-producer Jen Gapay, aka Thirsty Girl Productions, who is responsible for the New York Burlesque Festival as well as co-produced Amanda Lepore’s CD release concert last year with Nardicio, and the Key West Burlesque Festival.
The duo hope to bring a whole new audience to Feinstein’s at The Regency as well as expose the performers to new fans. “I love Feinstein’s. Our goal her isn’t just to do a short series- it’s to bring a whole fresh generation of talent to this amazing venue.” says Nardicio.

I also run a musical theater group for at-risk youth, and this year for Christmas we’ll be mounting a Sylvia Plath festival. I’m especially excited about the original song, “Silver Bell Jar”.

A relatively famous friend of mine told me a story. He was visiting LA, and was invited to Thanksgiving dinner at Elizabeth Taylor’s house. He arrived at her house nervously, and Ms Taylor opened the door herself and welcomed him warmly. Last weeks email solicited a few unsuspected responses. I had no actual one promoter in mind when i set out to list 10 Lame Things Promoters do, it was more just a list of things that annoy me and i have been accused of some of them myself in the past. But my favorite response is by this total LOON who wrote me when i started weeding out the s*x parties because i guess, he felt threatened by that. So, he decided to email me this #11 for my top ten lame things that promoters do.
“11. They are old, ugly, with scrawny bodies, pencil dicks, and the chicken chest. They are uneducated and ignorant. They are judgmental of others to hide their own insecurity. They surround themselves with handsome men to make themselves appear handsome (Note: Not working). They think no knows their list was meant to be the swipe at Mark Nelson. They are a big shitty asshole and everyone knows it! LOL! LOL! LOL!”
I have only 2 things to say to that:
1.) My email was not a swipe at Mark Nelson- i love Mark and think what he’s done at Splash with the F Word is fantastic.
2.) I DO NOT have a pencil dick. Anyone who knows me knows i have blessed with at least a Sharpie! LOL! LOL! LOL!

I love Drew Droege. The adorabe comedian first came to my attention past Spring when someone forwarded me his hilarious Chloe Sevigny impersonation video called simply “Spring” and i became obsessed. As i often do with obsessions, i simply HAD to befriend this person, and ultimately, work with him. And as I told friends about these videos, I got “Kah-ween we’ve been obsessing over them for months now.” And once again i felt Tardy to the Party.
I booked Drew as Chloe for the Sandra Bernhard/Peaches event this past Summer on Fire Island which got cancelled because of Hurricane Irene, but alas, we are rescheduling that for Summer 2012. But in doing my Drew research for my interview, I learned something very interesting: Drew is much more that a simple Chloe Sevigny impersonator-one hit wonder. With a hilarious podcast you can listen to HERE, plus a lot of background in true comedy education, I forecast Drew Droege may just outshine Chloe Sevigny one day.
I had a chance to talk with Drew as he prepared to head to NYC for this week’s Out 100- and here’s what he had to say:

Andrew WK seems like something of an immortal character from my childhood. He reminds me of the teenagers I idolized as a kid in the 80s, the ones who listened to Def Leppard and Lita Ford… part badass, part doofus. The guys that Wayne’s World were inspired by. Its all very tongue-in-cheek and self aware, its no wonder that his song “Party Hard” became a well known internet meme. In my research I discovered he and I grew up just a few hours from each other (he in Michigan, I across the border in Ontario, Canada), and it somehow explains a lot about his sensibilities, and sense of humor. If I were born a woman, I hope I would be something like Cherie Lily. Performer, vocalist, fitness guru, dancer, and much more. She’s also “Mrs. Andrew WK” (to his “Mr. Cherie Lily”), the two married in 2008 in the club that Andrew co-owns, NYC’s legendary Santos Party House. you know, i love promoting. Or should i say, I love promoting things i enjoy. But what i dont love is when bad promoters besmirch the name promoter by being douchey and lame- that doesnt happen too often, but when it does, it’s annoying enough to be in my list of 10 Lame Things Promoters Do! 1.) Sending you text messages which say “hey! I haven’t seen you in awhile! Come to my party” But they’re a mass text they send out to everyone!
2.) Calling weds “humpday” and thinking its clever and funny.
3.) Using “cum” instead of “come” and thinking its sexy- its not.
4.) Promising “naked” dancers but really its guys in underwear. Naked is naked.
5.) Calling something an “underwear party”, yet when you get there its 20 people in clothes and one skinny dude the bartender talked into getting into his undies for a free drink.
6.) Calling anything an “underwear party”. Leave that to professionals. Throw what you know. I don’t throw bear parties for a reason.
7.) Calling anything “so you think you can….” Or “—– idol”. Done million times before. Get a new gimmick. NEXT!
8.) Illiteration. This is the #1 offender of lazy promoters and bar owners and it makes me sad to the core.

But there’s one name that everyone can agree started it all- who turned Go Go dancing from a way to make cash into an art, seemingly without knowing he was doing it.
and that man was Mark Allen.

By the time i saw Mark, he had entered his, shall we say “Ennui Phase“? I spotted him at Champs on 19th street when i went with then- roomate Justin Bond, who was going to perform there (V got booed–how times have changed)
I was new to going out, it was about 13 years ago. Mark looked so remote, so over it, that it made him even more distant.
And I had never seen anything hotter.

You know how you see someone that so hot that it actually hurts that you cant have s-e-x with them??
In speaking with him, i found out that by that time, he was actually bored, and shortly thereafter, he quit dancing. I didnt see Mark again until years later.
I met Mark when i was in his hilarious showPitchand was so excited to meet him that i experienced something akin to stage fright. You see, Mark was not only a NYC Go Go Boy, he was THE NYC Go Go boy.

I tweet-talked him about meeting him for lunch and doing this interview- and the results are below:
Hey Mark: let me just get this out of the way- how are your balls?
M: Hold on, let me check. (pause) It’s doin’ fine!
D: And you’re healthy now?
M: I was cured of testicular cancer over a decade ago, why I dropped out of the gay club scene in the late 90′s (a long time ago!) I think we can all keep waiting on that Lifetime movie about the NYC go go boy who gets ball cancer.
D: You’ve managed to finagle the gay American Dream (or at least mine): You were the hottest thing going, then you left and married a Bluegrass musician and moved upstate to a house in the Catskills- how is that working out?
M: It’s bliss! Or is it? There’s a weird thing being a gay guy in NYC… when you enter a long-term committed relationship you suddenly feel like you’re cheating on every potential trick in the city.
D: People always want to know this- whats the most insane things that happened to you while dancing in NYC in the 90′s?
M: Go go dancing in a wheelchair on the bar at Pyramid and pretending to be paralyzed all the way up to going home with a guy (surprise!) …or maybe getting picketed by screaming protesters as racist for having a show with “Puerto Rican Drug Dealers” in the title — complete with my picture crossed-out on signs and effigies of raw meat with my face stapled to them — at Webster Hall, ending up on the news, and having one third of NYC hate my guts (we eventually made up!) …or maybe the time Angel Melendez saw me talking to one of his boyfriends at Club USA, then kept calling me at all hours, legitimately threatening to kill me (kind of ironic!) That was one week.
D: I have a theory: Go Go Boys tend to be bottoms, and Drag Queens tend to be tops- do you agree?
M: Thanks for the mental picture. You’re onto something there Daniel. Although if bottoms really “top from the bottom,” what does that leave drag queens doing?
D: When you left dancing, you worked the door at many clubs until you segued into writing and storytelling- how’d that come about?
M: I’d been writing for The New York Times, and read my monologues on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” so I eventually decided to start doing it in front of a live audience at NYC events like Risk!, The Moth, Ask Me, etc. I haven’t had to take my clothes off once!
D: What a shame. If a young, aspiring Go Go Dancer approached you for advice, what would you tell him?
M: Be scantily clad and add little to the narrative. Also, don’t eat six hour before dancing so your stomach will be flat (plus, the hungry look in your eyes as you’re up on the box dreaming of cheeseburgers will read as sexy!)

iGrieve RIP Steve Jobs It’s odd that i find the whole Steve Jobs dying thing kind of sad- i mean, i didnt even know the guy. On Thursday, April 14, from 7-10pm, Daniel Saynt and Daniel Nardicio are hosting A Cocktail Fundraiser for Japan Animal Rescue, where 100% of proceeds will benefit ARK: Animal Rescue Kansai. The event, which takes place at the Soho Grand Hotel, has a suggested donation of $10 per person, to help the thousands of pets and animals who were left homeless after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan just over a month ago. DJ Bobby Nourmand will be spinning tunes to get everyone in the mood.
According to Daniel Saynt, “One of the most inspiring stories that has come from the tragedy in Japan is of the dog that was found three weeks after the tsunami, alive and living on the roof of a home floating out at sea. That story made me feel the need to support animal rescue in Japan which lead to the development of this event.
I choose Animal Rescue Kansai cause they were based outside of the most dangerous area of Japan and are actively working with rescue groups to provide room for those pets left homeless.”
And Daniel Nardicio had this to say, “They say you judge a society by how it treats it’s animals, and in this case it is particularly true.
